How to Prove Your Art Is Human-Made in the Age of AI

With AI-generated images flooding the internet, proving your artwork is genuinely human-made has never been more important. Here's how creators can protect their authenticity.

The internet has an authenticity problem. Every day, millions of AI-generated images are posted online, many without any disclosure. For human artists, this creates a frustrating reality: how do you prove that you actually made your work?

This isn't just about pride. It's about trust, credibility, and livelihood.

The Liar's Dividend

There's a concept in media studies called the liar's dividend. When fake content becomes widespread, it doesn't just harm people who are deceived by fakes. It also harms people who create real content, because now everything is suspect.

For artists, this means:

  • Clients questioning whether your portfolio is real
  • Social media followers accusing you of using AI
  • Art competitions rejecting entries over AI suspicion
  • Reduced trust in digital art as a whole

The burden of proof has shifted. It's no longer enough to simply create. You need to prove you created.

What Doesn't Work

Before we talk about solutions, let's address what doesn't work:

AI detection tools are unreliable. Studies consistently show they produce false positives, especially with digital art that uses clean lines, gradients, or stylized rendering. An artist with a polished style is more likely to be flagged as AI than an actual AI image with added noise. Watermarks and signatures can be easily removed or, worse, added to AI-generated work. They prove nothing about the creation process. Social media posts claiming "I made this" carry no weight without evidence.

What Actually Works: Process Documentation

The most effective way to prove your art is human-made is to document your creative process. This means:

1. Save Your Project Files

Your .psd, .procreate, .clip, or .blend files contain layer history, undo states, and metadata that are nearly impossible to fake. A Photoshop file with 50+ layers showing progressive refinement is powerful evidence.

2. Record Timelapses

Most digital art tools offer built-in timelapse recording. Procreate does it automatically. For others, a simple screen recording works. A 30-second timelapse showing hours of work compressed is compelling proof.

3. Keep Work-in-Progress Screenshots

Take screenshots at different stages: rough sketch, refined linework, flat colors, shading, final details. This progression is the fingerprint of human creativity.

4. Save Reference and Planning Materials

Mood boards, thumbnail sketches, written notes about your concept. These show the thinking behind the work, something AI simply doesn't do.

Third-Party Certification

Process documentation is great, but it's even more powerful when verified by a third party. That's where certification platforms come in.

At I'VE MADE THIS, we review your evidence, analyze your files for metadata and content credentials (C2PA), and issue a verifiable certificate. It's like an SSL certificate, but for creative authenticity.

Your certified work gets:

  • A unique certificate ID that anyone can verify
  • A public certificate page showing the verification status
  • A listing in our gallery of verified human-made works
  • Reputation points that build your credibility over time

The Future of Creative Trust

We believe the art world is moving toward a trust-based model, similar to how the web moved from HTTP to HTTPS. In the future, verified human-made work will carry a premium, and artists who build their verification history now will be ahead of the curve.

The question isn't whether verification will become standard. It's whether you'll be ready when it does.
